Emocean

Every journey into the deep leaves a record of the water along the way. Measurements of temperature, salinity, oxygen and depth reveal an ocean that changes continuously from the surface to the seafloor.

Emocean brings that data to life. Reach into the imagery and the ocean responds. Data ripples and reshapes around your movement while sound fills the space, turning the descent into something you can hear and feel. Then follow a CTD as it descends through the water column, recording conductivity, temperature and depth. Listen as each change enters the soundscape, building into something deeper and more enveloping as the instrument travels farther below the surface.

Developed through the OceanX Education Residency Program in partnership with Pioneer Works, Emocean brought sound artist Matt McCorkle together with Hybrid Xperience, OceanX scientists and educators, and collaborators across ocean science and immersive technology.
