The Liquid Commons

Twenty-nine student artists enter the ocean through different doors. Some begin with microscopic traces of life. Others look to deep-sea ecosystems or the technologies that allow us to see beyond the reach of the human body. Together, their works form The Liquid Commons, a screening from NTU’s School of Art, Design and Media.

The works were developed across two courses exploring artificial intelligence as a creative medium: the undergraduate DM2012 Explorations of AI Generative Art and the postgraduate AP7055 Art in the Age of Creative Machine.

OceanX footage and writing became source material for the students, alongside images of submersibles and research instruments moving through the deep. Ideas drawn from environmental DNA and life aboard a research vessel entered the studio, carrying ocean science into new creative territory.

Each artist translated these encounters through their own visual language. The ocean stretches across time and shifts in scale. Familiar forms dissolve and reappear. Life moves at the edge of perception, shaped by the meeting of human imagination and machine.

Presented in conjunction with the CDSA Festival and a Connecting Classes exchange with Universität der Künste Berlin, The Liquid Commons opens a longer international conversation. As the students share their work with peers, the project will continue to explore how ocean ideas can move through AI tools and emerge across large public screens.
